Developing Medical Educator Competencies in Assessment: An ACGME Faculty Development Hub Course

Overview

This intensive one-day program for MGB staff is designed to help medical educators build the assessment and teaching competencies essential for training the next generation of surgeons. Using both a learner-centered and programmatic lens, the course equips participants with practical frameworks for teaching technical skills, delivering constructive feedback, conducting direct observation, and connecting assessment data to ACGME milestones and Entrustable Professional Activities (EPAs).

This year, the program welcomes educators from across procedural specialties, reflecting a shared commitment to advancing teaching and assessment practices across the procedural learning environment.

Sessions combine evidence-based content with highly experiential, hands-on practice, including simulation-based direct observation exercises, so participants leave with skills they can apply immediately in the clinical setting.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

• Describe the principles of Competency-Based Medical Education (CBME) and their application to surgical and procedural residency training.
• Apply adult learning theories, including retrieval practice, spaced learning, and experiential learning, to teaching in the operating room, procedure suite, and clinic.
• Utilize structured frameworks for teaching technical skills using different approaches.
• Deliver specific, timely, and actionable feedback to trainees using evidence-based methods.
• Conduct direct observation of trainees and translate observations into meaningful, milestone-informed assessments.
• Develop an individualized action plan for continued growth as a medical educator.

Target Audience

MGB attending physicians, training program leaders, fellows, and residents who supervise trainees and are interested in strengthening their teaching and assessment skills.

Surgeons as Teachers Certificate

Residents in the MGB Department of Surgery who attend this course and complete 15 hours of simulation teaching will earn the Surgeons as Teachers Certificate.

This certificate recognizes residents who have demonstrated a commitment to surgical education by actively contributing to the training of their peers through hands-on simulation instruction.
